INDORE: The CBSE school students in the state will now lessons on real life topics like utility of PAN card, filing tax returns, types of taxes, consumer rights, money laundering, dabba trading, shares and so on.

Under National Centre for Financial Education (NCFE), CBSE schools in the state have collaborated with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Securities Exchange Board of India, Insurance Regulatory Authority of India, Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority and National Institute of Securities Markets to incorporate facets of financial management in school curriculum.

The school curriculum draft prepared by NCFE on financial literacy covers wide range of topics which will be useful for students in the future. The list of topics to be taught in schools include plastic money and e-money, borrowing, investment, interest rate, types of bank accounts, services offered by banks, Aadhaar card, demat account etc.

Though the programme was launched by RBI back in 2013-14, not many schools across the state showed any interest in including it in their curriculum.

However aiming at including financial literacy in schools, NCFE has now approached CBSE school principals across the country and have also formed ambassadors in each zone to promote financial literacy amongst schools.

From the west zone, school principal from Indore Jaydeb Kar has been appointed as the ambassador who will be promoting financial literacy in schools of MP and CG, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan.

"Financial literacy is an important for holistic development of each student. This is a first of its kind national level test, conducted by NCFE, to measure the level of financial literacy among school students," saidJaydeb Kar, principal of
Vidya Bhawan Public School.

"Students can be taught financial management through various activities and projects like listing their expenses and savings, using piggy banks. The list of topics suggested by NCFE has important and relevant topics that will be useful for students in real life," he added. Even students agreed that there is a need for financial literacy.

They said that there are many topics in their books that may not help them in real world but such topics will be helpful for the rest of their lives.

"When I graduated from school, I was so unaware about the working of the bank and had to face a lot of difficulty while filling up online forms for college admissions. I wish we had some knowledge about these practical topics in schools," said Shikha Singh
