Students And Parents Term Move As Unfair
The Central Board of
Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to do away with the re-evaluation
facility for Class XII candidates from 2017. CBSE chairman R K
Chaturvedi announced the move at a media briefing on Tuesday . The board
had introduced a three-tier re-evaluation system for Class XII
candidates in 2014. Students and parents TOI spoke to termed the latest
move as “unfair“. While the options of verification of marks
(calculation errors) and access to photocopy of evaluated answer scripts
will continue, the final stage of re-evaluation (complete check of
answers) has been discontinued. CBSE reasoned that a negligible
percentage of students actually applied for re-evaluation and, that in
case of any discrepancies, they could approach the regional offices. The
re-evaluation facility was valid for 11 subjects -English (core and
elective), Hindi (core and elective), mathematics, physics, chemistry ,
biology, business studies, economics and accountancy . Under the
re-evaluation system, still valid till 2016, a candidate first has to
apply for verification of marks, followed by an application for
photocopy of the answer sheets. Finally , one can apply for
re-evaluation in the above-mentioned subjects. Also, there is a cap on
the number of questions a candidate could demand reevaluation for.
Going by the CBSE's claim, around 10,700 (1% of 10.7 lakh candidates as per the 2016 Class XII Boards) students apply for verification. Of that, 50-100 go for re-evaluation.
TIMES VIEW:
The CBSE should not scrap the provision for re-evaluation of papers. It may well be true that only a tiny fraction of those who appear for the exams seek re-evaluation, but that is not a good enough reason for scrapping it. Even if only one student needs to use it, the provision must be retained. After all, it is not as if there is a huge cost involved in the exercise.
