'17 med admissions to be based on NEET only
Mumbai: TNN

Even as several parents are worried about last-minute changes in the weightage given to NEET for undergraduate medical admissions, the Directorate of Medical Education and Research has made the assurance that it would be completely based on NEET scores. “According to the notification released by the CBSE and Medical Council of India's regulation, admissions will be completely based on NEET scores for 2017 admissions,“ said director Pravin Shingare.
The Supreme Court last week said it would not be correct to decide the fate of students through a single entrance examination. “This, however, will not be applicable for the 2017 admissions as the notifications are out,“ Shingare said.

One agency for all entrance tests; UGC set for revamp
TEAM TOI

Budget 2017 provided for a marginal hike in allocation for education as compared to last year. The bulk of the increase is aimed at construction of second generation IITs and IIMs. Three big announcements -revamping the University Grants Commission, a proposal for a National Testing Agency and measuring annual learning outcomes of school students -are much needed reforms with little or no financial implications. The National Testing Agency will be an autonomous and self-sustaining organisation to conduct all entrance examinations for higher education institutions.

The Budget provides for Rs 2,802 crore for school education (Rs 46,356 crore in 2017-18 from Rs 43,554 core in 2016-17) and Rs 4,489 crore for higher education (Rs 33,329 crore in 2017-18 from Rs 28,840 crore in 2016-17).The director an old IIT said, “The Higher Education Funding Agency announced last year is yet to be implemented. A lot was promised under project Vishwajeet to improve our global rankings. It is unfortunate the government wants our institutions to get higher ranks globally , but refuses to support us financially .“

Open Text Based Assessment (OTBA) was introduced by CBSE in Class IX (in the subjects Hindi, English, Mathematics, Science and Social Science) and final examination of Class XI in select subjects (Economics, Biology and Geography) from March, 2014.

Considering the modicum partial attainment of desired objectives of OTBA and also based on the feedback of stakeholders, the Board subsequent to the resolution passed in the Governing Body Meeting, has decided to withdraw the OTBA from the Scheme of Studies in Classes IX and XI from the Session 2017-18.
The decision of the Board may be noted by all concerned for actions accordingly
