NEW DELHI:
The World is revering teachers today. Held annually on October 5 since 1994, the World Teachers' Day is observed to commemorate the adoption of 1996 ILO/ UNESCO recommendation concerning the status of teachers, their rights and responsibilities and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions.
UNESCO co-convenes the World Teachers' Day with UNICEF, UNDP, the International Labour Organization, and Education International.
This year's theme for the teachers' day is "Young Teachers: The Future of the Profession".
"With the theme, Young Teachers: The Future of the Profession, we recognize the critical importance of reaffirming the value of the teaching mission. We call upon governments to make teaching a profession of first choice for young people. We also invite teacher unions, private sector employers, school principals, parent-teacher associations, school management committees, education officials and teacher trainers to share their wisdom and experiences in promoting the emergence of a vibrant teaching force," said the conveners in a joint message.
"The media and new technologies must be instrumentalized to elevate the teaching profession, and to demonstrate its importance for human rights, social justice and climate change. Governments must also improve employment and working conditions," the message adds.
On the theme for the teachers' day the message reads, "Without a new generation of motivated teachers, millions of learners will miss out, or continue to miss out, on their right to a quality education."
In their message the conveners have also highlighted the reason that dissuades youngsters from teaching profession. "With teachers being underpaid and undervalued, attracting and retaining talent is a challenge," they said.
As per the data given by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics the world needs almost 69 million new teachers to meet the Education 2030 Agenda.
"To succeed in this, education systems need an injection of fresh thinking on how to recruit, train, incentivize and retain the brightest minds for 21st century classrooms," the conveners have said in the joint message.
The joint message has been given by Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO; Guy Ryder, Director-General, International Labour Organization; Henrietta H. Fore, Executive Director; UNICEF Achim Steiner, Administrator, UNDP and David Edwards, General Secretary, Education International.
India celebrates Teachers' Day on September 5.

Govt firm on compulsory Marathi in state schools

Govt firm on compulsory Marathi in state schools
— Vinamrata Borwankar | Sat Oct 05 2019 | Mumbai:
To ensure Marathi is compulsory in state schools, education department on Thursday said secondary and higher secondary students in state board schools cannot opt for vocational subjects in lieu of the language.
From 2015, the department began offering vocational subjects for classes IX-XII. Students from English medium schools could drop the second language, while those from other mediums could opt for vocational subjects instead of second and third languages. Nearly 500 schools in the state offer the subjects. An education department official said the subjects have few takers.
A year later, the department allowed students to drop social sciences, apart from languages, for the vocational subject. “In SSC 2019 exams, several Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati medium schools allowed students to drop Marathi and take vocational subjects. This is a setback to making Marathi compulsory in schools programme. To ensure it is not repeated, the government decided to clarify rules,” said a GR on Thursday.
Students from Marathi medium schools can opt for vocational subjects by dropping their second language or social sciences. But students from other mediums cannot drop Marathi (second language). They can drop the third language or social sciences.
A few months back, the state formed a committee of Marathi literary and education experts to draft a law to make Marathi mandatory in all boards.

NEW DELHI:
Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday urged schools to make poetry reading and appreciation a compulsory part of their curriculum.
"I urge schools to make poetry reading and appreciation a compulsory part of the curriculum. I also ask the universities to encourage literature, arts and humanities education," he said.
"I believe that it is crucial to promote arts and culture to build an enlightened and healthy society. Arts nurture creativity in the society. Without a creative voice, the society will become stagnant," said the Vice President while addressing the valedictory ceremony of the 39th World Congress of Poets at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology University here.
"Poets can be influencers and opinion-makers. They have the unique potential to shape thoughts, feelings and attitudes. I am confident that they will use this tremendous power at their disposal, to build a better world," Mr Naidu said.
"Artists enliven lives. Some artists transform our lives. They change our perception, our world view. Artists are the conscience keepers of the society. They constantly question the absurd and the illogical and help instil positive values in the society," he added.
He said that poetry helps to promote peace and harmony in the society and foster universal brotherhood.
"Poetry is one of the finest expressions of human emotion. It conveys deep insights, a wide range of emotions and elevates the human experience to the highest levels of consciousness. It has a great impact on the inner chemistry of human emotions, on how we perceive, how we respond and how we behave," the Vice President said.
Informing that India's tryst with poetry was as old as its civilization, he said that great Indian epics the Ramayana and the Mahabharata were among the finest specimens of poetry ever written.

The epics are celebrated world over for grandeur of their themes, extraordinary literary heights and depth of messages they convey, he added.

Are NCERT Books Enough to Prepare for JEE Main? How They Can Help Score Well in Entrance Exam Explained

Let’s understand why NCERT books are considered the best study resources to master the basics for JEE.

Updated:October 3, 2019, 6:39 PM IST

Every year, lakhs of students burn the midnight oil to simultaneously prepare for board exams and the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE). The score obtained in JEE, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), decides the future of students who aspire to get admission to India’s prestigious engineering colleges. If you are an IIT aspirant, you may be referring to the best JEE prep materials, but ignoring NCERT books may not be a good idea.

Let’s understand why NCERT books are considered the best study resources to master the basics for JEE.
Many of the topics in the CBSE syllabus are common with the JEE syllabus. That’s one of the reasons why expert educators and JEE toppers emphasise the use of NCERT textbooks and NCERT solutions to prepare for JEE Main.
Keep reading to understand the importance of NCERT books for JEE.
1. Score more in Inorganic Chemistry
Chemistry is one of the subjects in Paper-I of JEE Main. In Chemistry, many of the questions on p-block elements in JEE come from the NCERT book. Also, most of the time, JEE Main questions on inorganic reactions are taken directly from NCERT books. Solutions for NCERT Chemistry 11 and 12 can be useful to revise basics during JEE preparation. For practising questions from Physical Chemistry, you may need to refer to other JEE Main books and study materials.
2. Tackle numerical problems and more
JEE Main consists of two papers. Students can opt to appear for either of the papers or choose any one paper as per their preference. Both papers have Mathematics and that’s why understanding the basics of Mathematics is extremely important for IIT aspirants.
Mathematics for JEE involves thinking abilities that require preparation beyond the problem questions given in NCERT books. But problems from the NCERT Maths textbooks have appeared in JEE too. Moreover, the basic knowledge of concepts such as complex numbers and coordinate geometry can be gained by practising with Class 11 and 12 Maths NCERT solutions. Every year, at least one question comes from the topics of Vectors, Mathematical Reasoning and Statistics based on the questions in the NCERT Maths book.
Although some of the concepts don’t directly appear in JEE, the basic concepts from NCERT books enable IIT aspirants to answer advanced mathematical problems in JEE. In this way, whenever students practise problems from other JEE Maths reference books with advanced problems, they are better prepared to grasp the advanced problem-solving methods.
3. Learn the basics in Physics
Physics is one of the subjects included in Paper-I of the JEE Main exam. If you review the past years’ papers of JEE, you’ll see that the problems in JEE Physics can be difficult compared to the ones in the NCERT book. To prepare for these JEE problems, you will have to use additional study materials. However, if you learn the JEE topics from the NCERT Physics textbooks, you will realise that you are able to easily understand topics such as fluid mechanics, electromagnetism etc.
NCERT solutions for Class 11 and 12 Physics will be useful for improving your JEE Physics scores because questions from NCERT books have appeared in JEE Main in the past. NCERT textbooks for Physics carry the basic concepts of topics covered in the JEE syllabus. By studying the NCERT solutions for Physics, you’ll have the basic understanding of how to think about problem questions in JEE and come up with accurate answers for improving your JEE score.
4. Recommended by JEE toppers
Every year, JEE toppers recommend studying the basics from NCERT books. With the help of NCERT solutions, the foundation of each subject in JEE can be strengthened. Also, it is easier to quickly revise basic concepts with the chapter summaries given in NCERT textbooks.
Whether NCERT books are sufficient for JEE or not has been an ongoing argument for IIT aspirants. NCERT books for JEE is just like what ingredients are to cooking. If you don’t understand the ingredients and basic cooking techniques, you cannot learn advanced cooking or solve problems.
Also, NCERT solutions for Class 11 and 12 can actually help you to earn the minimum cut-off in JEE Main. Study Inorganic Chemistry, practise Maths numerical problems or revise Physics concepts with NCERT books. NCERT solutions will help you grasp the basics of all JEE subjects.
The bottom line is that NCERT books are among the best books for JEE Main, but they are not enough as they don’t include revision of complex JEE questions. With NCERT books, you can build your foundation of the basic knowledge required for tackling advanced level problems in JEE.
Also, questions from NCERT books occasionally appear in the JEE Main exam. You cannot ignore the benefits of NCERT books for JEE preparation because they can help you score more marks directly and indirectly.
If you aspire to crack JEE, you can find useful JEE prep material, including NCERT solutions, on TopperLearning.com.
CBSE Class 10 Preparation Tips: Topics You Must Study to Score Goods Marks in Science

Here is how you can approach, study and go over the Science chapters to score good marks in CBSE Class 10 board exam.
Updated:October 3, 2019, 6:56 PM IST

Success in the Class 10 Board Exams is an important milestone in a student’s life, and science is a stepping stone for a career in medicine and engineering.

There is no mindless mugging and every concept has some logic. So, to tackle this subject, rote learning will not work, rather one must focus on logical learning. Students can score good marks in science with a thorough understanding of concepts and right preparation.
Physics, Chemistry and Biology are the subjects which constitute the Science paper and in which CBSE Class 10 students are tested based on the chapters in the syllabus. There is a lot to prepare, but you don’t have time? Don’t worry, this issue is faced by almost everyone.

Here’s a list of some of the most crucial topics which should not be missed when revising for your exams.
Capture
Now that you have this list of important concepts, try to focus and be thorough with them. Do not miss studying these! There is no shortcut other than this, and you must try hard to get through these concepts at least.

Here is how you can approach, study and go over the Science chapters.
 Chemical Reactions and Equations
In this chapter, you should not miss balancing the different types of chemical reactions. Make a list of chemical reactions where the conversion takes place from one compound to another. You need to remember the definitions and examples of each type of reaction.

Acids, Bases and Salts
In this chapter, understanding of the concept rather than mugging will help you learn and score more effectively. An application-type question based on pH is quite likely from this chapter.

Metals and Non-Metals
NCERT textbook questions of this chapter are enough to test knowledge and analytical skills. You should not miss questions in the NCERT book if you wish to score good marks in this chapter. Please check the NCERT Solutions for this chapter.

Carbon and its Compounds
Be thorough with chemical reactions of ethanol and ethanoic acid. You can also expect short questions on the homologous series and electron dot structure. Do not miss the processes of saponification and the cleansing action of soap.

Periodic Classification of Elements
In this chapter, remember the first and last elements present in the groups and periods of the periodic table. Solving various application-based questions from this chapter will help you to clear concepts.

Life Processes
This chapter is a favourite for both short and long answer-type questions. You can expect definitions, reasoning and understanding-based questions from this chapter. You may be asked to draw a diagram and explain any of the organ systems and functions in human beings.

Control and Coordination
You can expect process-oriented questions from this chapter. Don’t forget to revise the structure and functions of the human brain and the concepts of the reflex arc and synapse. For example, what happens at the synapse between two neurons? (Watch video)

How Do Organisms Reproduce?
Typically from this chapter, you might be asked questions on either binary fission in Amoeba or budding in Hydra. You are expected to draw neat and well-labelled diagrams while explaining the process.

Heredity and Evolution
The most difficult chapter is Heredity and Evolution, but it also has the most weightage. Although you may get scared even looking at this chapter, keep calm and try solving the problems based on Mendelian genetics.
Here’s how you approach a problem based on Mendel’s laws of inheritance.

·         A scientist crossed the F1 generation of pure breeding parents for round (dominant) and wrinkled (recessive) seed pea plants and obtained 7524 plants. What will be the number of round seeded plants he obtained? (View solution)
·
For more of such solved questions, you can always browse

the Doubts and Solutions section at TopperLearning.com. This section will not only help you to understand the types of questions asked from this particular chapter but also to know the answers to questions other students found difficult.

Light: Reflection and Refraction
From this chapter, you can expect numericals based on the concept of mirror formula and lens formula. Hence, a good practice of numericals is necessary to score well. Mastery of ray diagrams will definitely help you to solve questions quickly and precisely in the exam. Also study the concept Spherical lens and its power.

Human Eye and the Colourful World
Questions in the exam typically come from the topic Defects of Vision and their Correction. Understanding the phenomena of scattering and atmospheric refraction in this chapter is also very important to score good marks.

Electricity
This is a favourite chapter of the examiner and also an important one. Questions on the series and parallel combination of resistances must be practised thoroughly to score good marks. Also expect numericals based on Ohm’s law and the heating effect of electric current from this chapter.

Magnetic Effects of Electric Current
Mostly theoretical questions of either short or long answer-type come from this topic. So, you must have a very clear understanding about Fleming’s rule and Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction.

Sources of Energy
This chapter deals with renewable and non-renewable sources of energy. As per exam trends of previous years, not much weightage has been given to this topic in the board exams.

Our Environment
You can expect 2 or 3 marks questions from this chapter. Mostly, questions are based on environmental issues and managing garbage and pollution. You can even expect a short numerical based on the 10 percent law of energy transfer.

Management of Natural Resources
In this chapter, the favourite questions of examiners are based on the concepts of dams and conservation and sustainable use of resources. You are expected to express your own opinions and personal views on such open-ended questions.
There you go! That's all. If you religiously follow this strategy, you can expect to score good marks in the science exam. Enjoy what you learn, be curious, watch videos, make notes, share what you know with friends and practice regularly.
Remember that efforts need to be consistent to score well in your exams. No miracle will happen the night before the exam. Stay calm and focus. All the best!

Fill FYJC forms from today; colleges may allow digital payments this year

Mumbai:
The FYJC online centralized admission process which begins today will include 1% reservation for orphans as declared by the state in April. The state has also asked junior colleges to accept digital payments to ease the process.

“Like all other reservations, students will have to produce the relevant documents for orphans quota and get them attested from the admission guidance centres,” said Suvarna Kharat, deputy secretary, school education department.

The department has urged junior colleges to allow digital payments because students find it difficult to produce a demand draft (DD) in short period. “Most colleges seek DDs and getting them in two days adds to the stress of parents and burdens bank staff too. If that isn’t possible, they can ask students to confirm admissions by paying a token amount and give them some days to get the DD. Additionally, junior colleges must have a helpdesk for six days a week,” said Kharat.

This year too, students confirming their admissions under quotas will not be able to switch colleges in the regular rounds if they have already paid fees. While the rule was in place last year too, the department, at a later stage, allowed students to change colleges.

Meanwhile, the education department uploaded the previous year cut-offs on its portal but a lot of them were for 2016. “We will make the corrections in a day or two,” said an official.

Schools to conduct checks on students’ bags

SCHOOLS HAVE MADE CHANGES IN TIMETABLES AND ARE ENSURING RANDOM CHECKS THAT WILL HELP STUDENTS TO CARRY A LIGHTER BAG THIS ACADEMIC YEAR

THANE : After the state government’s diktat on making school bags lighter, many schools in Thane are taking measures to ensure that they succeed in doing so.

With the start of the new academic year, parents throng Jambali Naka market to buy stationery for their children. Schools have advised parents to not buy heavy pencil or tiffin boxes.
Schools have made changes in time-tables and are ensuring random checks that will help students to carry a lighter bag this academic year. For the last few years, schools have been receiving notices to enforce a limit on the weight of bags.

With most schools reopening on Monday, the rules are already in place. Lokpuram Public School has maintained a register that will enlist every student’s body weight and bag weight.

Fortnightly checks and provisions to keep books within classrooms have been made.

“Parents have been advised to get books only on the basis of the time-table. All notebooks are kept in classrooms and are taken home only on Friday for revision. They are returned on Monday. This practice helps in making the bags lighter for the rest of the week,” said Deepa Bhattacharya, principal, Lokpuram Public School.

Meanwhile, a few schools have made changes in their time-tables. DAV public school’s time-table has four slots, consisting of three subjects only. Children have to get three pairs of textbooks and notebooks and one diary to school. They are also given the liberty to share the textbooks with their partners. Random checks are a part of the rules; DAV has prepared a bag committee that comprises teachers, students and parents.

“We have inculcated various measures to ensure that school bags remain light. Parents also should cooperate and not make a hue and cry about it. As an educational institute, our focus has always been to make education fun for children,” said Simmi Juneja, principal, DAV Public School.
Shreerang English School has clubbed two periods so in the eight periods of the day, they only have to learn four subjects.

“Children are advised not to get heavy pencil boxes or tiffin boxes, as it increase the weight. It is essential for parents also to cooperate with such rules, as we have noticed many parents send all the books to class,” added Rupa Dey, principal of Shreerang English School.
